Frequently Asked Questions
British Baseball?
"America's Pastime", baseball’s origins can actually be traced right back here to the UK. British Baseball is growing fast, with over 100 teams now around the country registered with the British Baseball Federation.
Why are you called the ThunderKnights?
When we were formed ahead of the 2023 season we asked our members what we should be called. The top two suggestions were "Thunder" and "Knights", and then one bright spark suggested putting them together... and the ThunderKnights were born.
For the 2024 season the team split in two, with the New Forest Thunder competing at the AAA level, and the New Forest Knights in a Single-A league. But we're all still ThunderKnights at heart, and both teams play with that name on their jerseys. How do I get involved?
If you're over the age of 16, eager to learn the game and open to joining a fun group of players... just reach out to us. Check the Contact Us page, or find us on social media and drop us a message.
Does it cost to play?
The ThunderKnights are funded by sponsorshop and membership fees. So there is an annual fee, which can vary. Feel free to reach out regarding the current membership fees.
Where & When do you play/train?
For the 2024 season we trained every Wednesday evening, and played on Sundays. Training and home games were at Ballard School in New Milton.
For the 2025 season we are looking at moving our home games to Gang Warily. Training days/times have not yet been confirmed for 2025.
Our season begins in January with indoor pre-season training. We move outdoors in March, with the season running from April until August (September if we make the play-offs!).Do I need previous experience?
No. Anyone is welcome to join us, whether you've ever played Baseball or Softball, or if you've never played. Even if you've not watched much/any baseball before, our coaches will help you learn the rules of the game.
What equipment will I need?
For your first sessions, nothing specific. You can come and try the game and borrow our club equipment for the session.
Once you decide baseball is for you, you will need a glove of your own and suitable footwear. And if you want to play in competitive games you will need a uniform.
There are different types of gloves depending on the position that you play, your dominant hand and your age. If you need help choosing feel free to ask us, or speak to the coaches and other players at training.
Suitable footwear can be football boots or rugby boots. Specialist baseball "cleats" can be bought also. The Uniform consists of a jersey, a cap, socks to match the colour of your jersey and a pair of grey baseball trousers. Protective boxes should be worn also.
The club will provide bats, helmets, baseballs and catcher's gear. However, more seasoned players may choose to invest in their own personal gear. What League(s) are you in?
Both our teams are registered with the British Baseball Federation and compete in BBF affiliated leagues.
The Knights compete in Single-A as part of the South West and Wales Baseball League (SWWBL). They compete against teams based in Bournemouth, Bristol, Cardiff, Weston-Super-Mare, Taunton and Truro.
The Thunder compete in the BBF AAA South West Division alongside Bristol, Cardiff and Bracknell.
There are also several tournaments throughout the season, usually held over a single weekend. We may look to enter teams in some of these, and if we do not then players can choose to represent SWWBL in their combined league team.
